ANOTHER LOOK AT HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND........YOU



I wanted to take a closer look at the numbers given by BP for the amounts of gas flared between a 4 day interval......it reveals some very important things....I will say that this is done with averages...so don't take it as the absolute.....but...it does reveal that there is a much much larger amount of hydrogen sulfide in the water .......and methane is the lesser of the 2 by far ....it's a 70/30 split.....I think the the hydrogen sulfide is causing far worse problems than the methane.

First off, ...they are burning/flaring gas at rates that are changing...revealed by this...

 From BP Skandi ROV 2,  June 30

" On June 30, total oil recovered was approx. 23,080 barrels.
 approx. 14,875 barrels of oil were collected,
 approx. 8,200 barrels of oil were flared,
 and approx. 53.2 million cubic feet of natural gas were flared."


From BP Skandi ROV 2, June 26th

" For the first 12 hours on June 26,
approximately 7,570 barrels of oil were collected
approximately 4,070 barrels of oil and
approx 28.3 million cubic feet of natural gas were flared. "


 ....ok

Horizon's leak is estimated to be around 40% NG......natural gas can contain up to 28%
hydrogen sulfide.....it is HI-E oil, sour, high in sulfur.

Oil that is " flared "...is only coming from the point of capture..ie; the " cap "
Make no mistake in recognizing the difference between "burning " and " flaring "..they are two entirely different processes.

Math time...albeit ..the .parameters are constantly changing...but close enough to a constant to calculate.

Approx.              June 26th                  June 30th

...So...that's great news ! Almost doubled the capture rate in 4 days..!!

Sour Hi-E oil is estimated to average 40% natural gas by volume

28% of this natural gas is estimated to be hydrogen sulfide.

This would leave the rest to methane...and some others...but they are not in quantities large enough to discuss here...perhaps later.... .they are important too.

So you could say that :

A : 40% split....of the total dissolved gases ( minus the others )...... 28% hydrogen sulfide.......and 12% methane

So what they flared reveals this :

 28.3 million cu'   of natural gas flared                   

4,070 barrels ( total flared volume of gases )

40% of sour crude is natural gas....

28% of natural gas in sour Hi-E oil is hydrogen sulfide.

That leaves about 12%....I'm going to round down to 10% to take into consideration the other gases.

So...roughly 10% of the total gas is methane

And 28% is hydrogen sulfide

A. They are not being honest about the amount of natural gas they say they have been flaring..
B. They are not coming correct about the concentration of gases contained in the crude.

If they were flaring 28.3 million cubic feet of gas.....then at the least....by volume...

Sour crude has 40% natural gas by volume,     
 
28 % ( HS gas ) of 40 % ( total volume ) means 70 % of the natural gas flared is hydrogen sulfide

70 % of 28.3 million cu' = 1,980,999.9999999998 cu' of hydrogen sulfide gas flared.

12 % ( the other gases like methane ) of 40 % ( the total dissolved gases ) = 30 %

30% of 28.3 million cu' of gas is 849,000 of methane ...and other gases flared

1,980,000 + 849,000 = 2,829,000

So .....June 26th.............28,300,000 cu' flared - 28,900,000 cu' = 600,000 cu' discrepancy

40% ( estimated volume of NG in sour crude )  of 4,070 ( total barrels flared ) = 1,628 barrels ( NG )

There are 42 gallons in a petroleum barrel.

The industry estimates that this type of crude averages  40% NG by volume..

1 cubic foot = 7.48051945 US gallons

1 US gallon = 0.133680556 cubic feet

40% of 4,070 ( total barrels flared ) = 1,628 ( barrels of gas by volume )

If 28 % ( HS gas ) of 40 % ( total volume ) means 70 % of the natural gas flared is hydrogen sulfide..and

70 % of 28.3 million cu' = 1,980,999.9999999998 cu' of hydrogen sulfide gas flared.

and 12 % ( the other gases like methane ) of 40 % ( the total dissolved gases ) = 30 %

30% of 28.3 million cu' of gas is 849,000 of methane ...and other gases flared, ..then

1,980,000 + 849,000 = 2,829,000....that should be the total volume

On June 30th

40% ( total estimated NG by volume ) of  8,200  ( total barrels flared ) = 3,280 ( Barrels of gas by volume )

30% of 53.2 million cu' is  15,960,000 million cu' of methane

70 % of 53.2 million cu'  = 37,240,000 cu' of of hydrogen sulfide

37,240,000 + 15,960,000 = 53,200,000 cu ', .it.matches what BP says 

      no discrepancy in the numbers.

BP says 53.2 million cu' total gas flared on June 30th
BP said 28.3 million cu' total gas flared on June 26th

So over 4 days.....given the numbers provided by the petroleum industry.....of average gas saturation of sour crude.


600,000k cu' difference. in the numbers f from 6/26

No discrepancy on 6/30..the numbers correspond with the given estimates of NG found in sour crude.

                        That is an  increase of

% 2.076124 increase of the total dissolved gases in just 4 days.


 I hate math...if I am wrong, please let me know.
